Management to allow taxis to operate

Development and Technology Committee under the House of Representatives has directed the government to run the taxi business.

A meeting of the committee held at Singha Durbar on Wednesday directed the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport to make arrangements for the operation of taxis by adopting the necessary safety measures.

The committee has also instructed to implement certain standards for health safety while operating taxis. Committee Chairperson Kalyani Khadka informed that it is necessary to make the economy more dynamic by fulfilling the criteria prepared by the World Health Organization, Government of Nepal, Ministry of Health and Population and Covid 19 Case Management Committee (CCMC).

During the meeting, the transport sector workers had complained that the government had not listened to their grievances even after 107 days of strike. Workers said that even the government did not provide any relief to the transport workers during the crisis.

Dharma Bhandari, president of the Nepal Transport Workers' Union, said that if any transport worker is found to be positive for corona, his house expenses should be managed for the duration of his stay in isolation.

In the meeting, the parliamentarians and transport businessmen had said that the government should move towards operating public transport by adopting health awareness.

People's lives have been affected since the lockdown started on March 26 to reduce the risk of corona infection. In the transport sector, daily wage workers are facing more problems.
