Zurmang Gharwang Rinpoche’s book ‘Mahamudra: A Practical Guide’ contains instructions that are given as commentary to a short text written by Bokar Rinpoche. Bokar Rinpoche was born in 1940 into Parinirvana on 17 August 2004.

Bokar Tulku Rinpoche was the heart-son of the Second Kalu Rinpoche and a holder of the Karma Kagyü and Shangpa Kagyü lineages.

Rinpoche also taught many Westerns and established centres in the Western countries like France. He founded a monastery and retreat centre in Mirik, India that holds the special lineage of Kalachakra practice.

A short text written by Bokar Rinpoche is itself a concise commentary on the Ninth Gyalwa Karmapa Wangchuk Dorjé.

Born in Treshod, Kham, Ninth Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje was a legendary person who spoke and sat cross-legged soon after his birth. Having received his education, Wangchuk Dorje also wrote many classic Buddhist texts, many of which are still being taught today. Wangchuk Dorje was not only a spiritual leader, but also a mediator in conflicts.

When he traveled to Sikkim to settle a dispute, he established Rumtek Monastery. Karmapa was also a creative author and wrote many condensed commentaries on sutras and tantras, including three mahamudra treatises: The Ocean Of Definitive Meaning, Dispelling The Darkness Of Ignorance, and Pointing Out The Dharmakaya.

These treatises have played a major role in Tibet for the teaching and transmission of mahamudra. Ocean of Definitive Meaning, is considered to be one of the most authoritative and exhaustive treatises on mahamudra.

It offers a detailed, uniquely comprehensive presentation of instruction on both the view and the practice. The Ninth Karmapa's text has traditionally been available only to advanced students due to its profundity.

This book covers topics such as the preliminary practices, the practice of samatha and vipassana according to the mahamudra tradition, and advice for overcoming obstacles and making progress along the path.

In this book, Rinpoche gives practical instructions on methods to settle the mind and meditate in a way that directly works with the mind, with the aim of discovering and becoming familiar with the nature of the mind.

This book contains pithy teaching, illuminating and unlocking it for contemporary readers, showing us the way to understand the very nature of our own minds.
