Netflix trialing to crackdown on password sharing

Some netflix users reported that they are being asked whether they live with the owner of this account or it is their own account in order to keep watching the Netflix."

Netflix said that the test is being designed in order to ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to use those accounts. The company has not yet decided whether to roll out this test across its network or not.

For the time being, users are allowed to access the account by verifying a code, sent via text or email so that the ineligible users who use the platform against their terms of service can be disqualified.

Different streaming platforms including Netflix, HBO Go, Amazon Prime and Disney+, allow users to create multiple profiles within the account so that it can be used by people in the household.

According to Netflix co-founder and chief executive Reed Hastings, sharing password is something you have to learn to live with like legitimate password sharing, like sharing your spouse, with your kids which has no boundary line.

In October 2019, chief product officer Greg Peters told that issue of password sharing was being enquired but they weren’t planning on doing something differently for the time being.

In 2020 alone Netflix has gained almost 37 million new subscribers adding 200 million subscribers from around the world.

Netflix report nearly $25bn (£18bn) in revenue and almost $2.8bn (£2bn) in profit this year alone.
