Italy to close shops and schools amid surge in infection: Covid-19

Italy to shut down for three days in Easter from 3-5 April. With a new wave of coronavirus outbreak Italy is shutting down all shops, restaurants and schools.

Italy, imposed one of the first national lockdowns a year ago to contain the spread of the virus.

The country has reported more than 100,000 Covid-related deaths and ranks second- after the UK according to Worldometer.

Italy's vaccination campaign has been delayed, as many European Union countries halted the use of AstraZeneca vaccine.

Anglo-Swedish drug company AstraZeneca announced a shortfall in the amount of its vaccine to supply, blaming export restrictions imposed by some countries.

In January, it announced a large cut down in the 100m doses it had originally expected to deliver to the EU by March, after a dispute with European Commission.

Last week alone the government in Rome blocked the export of 250,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine to Australia to address shortfalls of vaccines.
