Indian city Maharastra returns to lockdown

Western Indian city Nagpur becomes the first major city in the country to return to a complete lockdown after coronavirus cases spikes up.

Lock down will be effective for a week from 15 March to March 19 2021 as Maharashtra state, has been a Covid hotspot, with the highest number of active and confirmed cases in India.

During lockdown essential services such as hospitals and grocery shops will remain open but government offices and industries, all other establishments and non-essential shops will remain closed.

India has recorded more than 11 million cases and 157,000 deaths so far. Caseloads have declined sharply in recent months across the country, but six states, including Maharashtra, have been reporting a fresh spike in infection.

Experts have warned for new variant to infect the community as people are not following social distancing rules and lack of masking is the very reason for the surge in cases.

The state cabinet minister Nitin Raut said the vaccine campaign drive will continue in Nagpur as per planned by the government.
