Former President Lula's will be able to run against incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro in the next election after being cleared by the court.

Leftist leader Lula was released in 2019 after 18 months in prison. Brazilian Supreme Court judge has overturned a previous conviction against Lula.

Former President Lula was convicted after an investigation into an operation called 'Operation Car Wash'. Other leaders and businessmen were also involved. But Judge Edson Fakin acquitted him.

Judge Fakin has ruled that court in the southern city of Kurichiba, which convicted him, has no jurisdiction to hear four cases.

Lula, who was president from 2003 to 2010, was convicted in 2018. In a statement issued after the verdict, Lula claimed that verdict was a proof given by the court.

Brazil's current president, Bolsonaro, has said that Brazilians do not want Lula to run again.
