Facebook agrees to pay for news content in Australia

Facebook has agreed the deal to pay News Corp Australia for news content coverage from its local mastheads.

The deal was finalized a few days after Australia passed a controversial world-first law for making tech platforms pay for news content.

Australian News Corp made a deal with Google last month but it has not disclosed the value of the 3-year contract yet.

News Corp Australia controls about 70% of newspaper circulation in Australia with titles including The Australian, The Daily Telegraph and The Herald Sun.

It owns news.com.au, the Fox News-modelled conservative TV network Sky News Australia, which is one of the most-shared Australian news brands on Facebook.

News Corp has a different deal with Facebook for its US media titles and involves the platform paying for stories to include in its Facebook News tab - a product which is not available in Australia.

The Australian deal is much broader, covering all News Corp Australia content shared on Facebook. Though both Google and Facebook had been strongly resistant to the media bargaining code.

Fcaebook banned news content in its platform for more than a week but after Australian government passed the law on 25th February tech firms have been encouraged to strike their own commercial deals with media outlets, such as this one between Facebook and News Corp.
