Burqa banned in Sri Lanka

Senior Sri Lankan government minister has announced a ban on burqa worn by Muslim women, closing more than a thousand Islamic schools simultaneously.

Senior Sri Lankan announcement is considered a strong blow to extremist Muslim group. According to ANI, Sri Lanka's Minister of Public Security Sarathe Virasekera told reporters that he had signed a directive to push for a ban on burqa. Because it is a sign of religious extremism, it has given birth to extremism.

According to Colombo Times, Minister Virasekara stressed need for the move, saying "Burka has a direct impact on country's national security and is a threat to our national security." That is why burqa must be banned.

Minister Virasekara added: "When we were little, we had many Muslim friends. But Muslim women did not wear burqa at the time, he said.

Minister Virasekara emphasized that burqa is a symbol of religious extremism, which has recently attracted a lot of attention. That is why banning it has become a national need of our country.

Talking about the regulation of madrasas, Minister Virasekara said that there are more than 2,000 such schools in the country. Where they have not given necessary education.

No one will be allowed to open and run schools arbitrarily. They must teach courses for students between the ages of 5 and 16 according to government education policy.

You can't just teach what you want. All children must study under National Education Policy. We will take immediate steps to ban more than 1,000 unregistered madrasas under Sri Lankan nationality.

Last year, Sri Lankan Parliamentary Committee on National Security proposed an immediate ban on burqa and suspended registration of political parties on ethnic and religious grounds.

Ban on burqa was imposed in churches and hotels in the country, which is home to a majority Buddhist population, after Islamic State militants killed 250 innocent people in 2019. However, some European countries affected by Islamic terrorism have also announced a partial ban on burqa.

Sri Lanka's move has dealt a severe blow to extremist Islamic groups.
