Tamang and Sherpa communities across the country celebrating Lhosar

Sonam Lhosar, New Year festival celebrated by Tamang community on the day of Magh Shukla Pratipada, is being celebrated today by organizing various programs.

According to Manjushri calendar, the 2857th year begins today. From today, the year of pig is completed and the year of mouse enters. Every year, Sonam Lhosar festival is celebrated with various programs on the occasion of Magh Shukla Pratipada.

Sonam Lhosar is divided into 12 categories including rats, cows, tigers, rabbits, dragons, snakes, horses, sheep, monkeys, birds, dogs and pigs.

All the 12 years of Lhosar have been counted by the names of animals. This festival is specially celebrated in different districts of Bagmati Pradesh where the Tamang caste is predominant. On the occasion of Lhosar, government has given public leave all over the country.

Tamang community is celebrating Sonam Lhosar and the Himalayan tribal Sherpa community is celebrating Gallo Lhosar.
