Law passed protesting Facebook and Google in Australia

Australia has passed a law requiring publishers to pay a fee to organizations such as Google and Facebook for using media news.

It is said to be the first such law in the world. American technology companies opposed the law.

Last week, Facebook shut down all Australian news because of the law, but it has reopened after talks with the government.

Amendments made after the talks opened the way for Facebook and Google to circumvent the law. That way, company can reach a direct agreement with news agency.

Australia's law is seen as a test of possible legislation in other parts of the world that would allow social media or news sites to pay a fee.

Law was amended by Australian House of Representatives on Thursday. Senate had already passed the law.
