Georgia's PM resigns

Georgia's Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia has announced his resignation.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Gakharia said he had decided to step down as prime minister.

Giorgi Gakharia is expected to resign as per the agreement reached with the ruling party on the arrest of Nika Melia, a member of parliament and head of the United National Movement Party.

Arresting Melia is a mistake. Incident has been described as a dangerous political event in the country, said officials. Georgia's parliament suspended Melia's parliament on Tuesday amid controversy.
