Australia changes few words in national anthem to address indigenous past

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced changes to few words in National Anthem on Thursday now from 1 January Australians will sing a different version of their national anthem where the anthem will no longer refer to Australia as "young and free".

With this changes in anthem, Mr. Morrison believes and hopes to pay homage to the country’s past indigenous history and civilization creating a “spirit of unity” among people of the country.

The line removed in the anthem, is called Advance Australia Fair, "For we are young and free". But now from today onwards people will sing "For we are one and free." He said the change celebrated the unity Australia formed during the coronavirus pandemic.

He also said “Changing 'young and free' to 'one and free' takes nothing away, but I believe it adds much," said Prime Minister Morrison.

"It recognizes the distance we have travelled as a nation. It recognizes that our national story is drawn from more than 300 national ancestries and language groups and we are the most successful multicultural nation on earth."

Australia is working to identify and acknowledge indigenous history of cultural and political events.
