12 years of rapid deforestation on Amazon

In Brazil, deforestation of the Amazon is accelerating.

The Amazon region of Brazil, considered important for world's climate balance, is also called the rainforest. It is said that this deforestation has reached its highest point in the last 12 years.

The Amazon region is home to some three million species of flora and fauna, and tens of millions of indigenous communities.

According to the latest figures, deforestation has increased by 9.5 percent compared to the previous year. Destruction of the Amazon rainforest has reached its highest point since 2008, according to space agency INPE.

Satellite images collected by INPE show that between August 2019 and July 2020 alone, some 11,000 square kilometers of forest were destroyed.

The Amazon rainforest is also one of world's most important carbon deposits. It plays a major role in reducing global warming. Deforestation has intensified in Brazil since Zaire Bolsonaro became president in January 2019.

Bolsonaro has been encouraging expansion of agricultural and mining activities in world's largest forest area. Elected President with a promise of development, he has been involved in promotion of mining and agriculture.
