Government sensitive to reduce incidents of harassment against women and dalits

Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa said that government was making all possible efforts to take measures to prevent disasters and make the post-disaster rescue work effective.

At a meeting of National Assembly, National Affairs and Coordination Committee held at Singha Durbar on Monday, Home Minister Thapa said that the misguided policy on development had led to disasters.

Home Minister Thapa said that government has enacted necessary laws and regulations to reduce the risk of natural calamities and disasters as floods, landslides, inundation and lightning kill an average of one thousand people a year and damage houses, infrastructure and crops.

Home Minister Thapa said that government was sensitive to reduce the incidents of harassment against women and dalits.

Home Minister Thapa informed that the idea of ​​setting up a Dalit desk in the police like Mahila Cell has been put forward and the incidents of rape and domestic violence against women have increased as compared to the previous year.

Earlier, in another committee meeting, Home Minister Thapa said that the incidence of violence in Nepal was less than other countries and argued that there was a difference in understanding. Thapa said that the situation of rape and violence against women in Nepal was not worrying compared to the rest of the world.

Lawmakers also drew attention of the government through Home Minister to pay special attention to the relocation of risk settlements and suggested to work in coordination among the three tiers of government and stop the wrong trend of selecting projects on the basis of impact and access.
