Fish Traders Run Away after Monitoring Team Arrived at Kalimati to Inspect Shops

The traders have run away after the monitoring team reached the fish shops in Kalimati of Kathmandu.

The traders fled after the Kathmandu Metropolitan team came to monitor the fish shops on Monday morning.

While the monitoring team was monitoring from one side, traders of 15 shops on the other side had pulled the shutters and fled. There are 26 fish shops near Kalimati Vegetable Market.

After the monitoring team of the metropolis reached the market and started monitoring the fish shops from the fruit market, the traders of 15 shops near the main entrance pulled the shutters and fled.

Some were able to lock their stalls, but some didn’t manage to. The monitoring team was seizing nine kilos of rotten fish found in Saptari fish shop when other traders pulled the shutter and fled.

‘I forgot to put ice. The fish is not so bad. It's just a matter of time, "said Mohammad Majlum Mian, a fish shop owner.

Damber Bahadur Bam, a veterinary service officer at the metropolitan veterinary service department, who arrived for the monitoring, said, "Traders are worried about the non-issuance of purchase and sale bills rather than the quality of the fish." During the monitoring, problems were seen in the registration, renewal and purchase and sale bills of many of the shops.

Without bills there will be no knowledge of when the fish was packed and when the purchase was made.

Chairman of the Consumer Rights Research Forum Madhav Timilsena, who was in the monitoring team, said, "The non-issuance of purchase-sale bill is the same as deceiving consumers in price and quality."

Chairman of the Kathmandu Fish Market Committee Birendra Kumar Yadav said that they welcomed the monitoring.

He said that they are also in favor of taking action against the traders who do not follow the law.
