Yoshihide Suga elected as new Japanese Prime Minister

Yoshihide Suga has been elected as new Prime Minister of Japan. Suga, who won last year's leadership of the ruling party, was elected prime minister by Japan's parliament today.

After Prime Minister Shinzo Abe resigned two weeks ago, Suga will complete the remaining term on behalf of the ruling party.

In his brief response to the media after the last cabinet meeting on Wednesday evening, Suga said that his eight-year tenure was very fruitful and he was proud of it.

The ruling Conservative Liberal Democratic Party has a majority in Japan's lower house. According to the BBC, Suga will be constitutionally sworn in as prime minister amid a ceremony at the Imperial Palace.
