Unused Sim Card Numbers can’t be sold for a year: Nepal Telecommunication Authority

Telecommunication service providers will not be allowed to sell unused SIM cards for one year. The service provider had the facility to deactivate the previously unused SIM card after six months and recycle it and resell it.

The Nepal Telecommunication Authority has recently made this new arrangement related to the use of SIM cards. "Now, only a year after the SIM card is not used, the service providers will be able to resell the SIM card," said NTA spokesperson Min Prasad Aryal.

NTA had taken such a decision for the first time on March 20, 2071 BS to discourage the trend of buying but not using SIM cards. The NTA has decided to deactivate the unused SIM card for six months but the NTA has decided not to sell it for six months.

Aryal said that the decision was taken keeping in mind the possibility of re-selling the SIM card in a short period of time as the data of the bank account, social network and other data used with the same number may be insecure.

Regarding the possible misuse of the number, the Nepal Bankers' Association had also requested the NTA to extend the period to two years, he said. ”

According to the latest statistics of NTA, three service providers have sold 37 million SIM cards till Jestha. However, the number of SIM cards sold till Mangsir last year was 42 million.

The service provider, meanwhile, recycled the SIM card and resold it. The NTA has stated that the sale time has been extended after the complaints of insecurity of the sensitive data of the previous user increased.

The trend of recycling SIM cards has increased among the service providers recently as the number of new SIM card numbers that can be created from the mobile code received by the service providers was limited.

Simultaneous recycling of the SIM card had significantly reduced the customer base of the service provider. Due to this, the number of mobile users has decreased by about 5 million. This news is in today's Gorkhapatra daily.
