Most Damage by Landslide This year in a Decade

This time the landslide has caused more human losses in a year after 2068 BS. The landslide has claimed the lives of 254 people. 81 people are missing. 152 people were injured. This figure is of within  2 months and 7 days after the onset of monsoon. The monsoon had started on Jestha 31 this year.

The monsoon is expected to continue till Bhadra. Sindhupalchowk, Bajhang, Myagdi, Kaski, Jajarkot, Achham, Kaski, Tanahu, Sankhuwasabha, Doti, Humla and 51 other districts have suffered heavy loss of life and property.

Although thousands have been displaced, there are no reliable figures. Billions of rupees have been lost.

Murari Awasthi, in-charge and deputy secretary of the National Emergency Operations Center under the Ministry of Home Affairs, said the landslide had caused great damage this year.He noted that only 83 people died last year. Eleven people were missing.

The Centre's data shows that 104 people were killed in 2068,According to Awasthi, there have been 104 landslides this year alone.

One hundred and eight people were killed in 29 incidents in Asar. 47 people went missing and 46 people were injured. A total of 132 people were killed in 64 incidents in Shrawan.

17 people went missing and 87 were injured. By the first week of August, 11 landslides have occurred. Fourteen people have been killed and 17 are missing in the incidents. 19 people have been injured. Eighty percent of the injured have recovered and returned home.

More than 1,500 families in Myagdi and more than 200 families in Sindhupalchowk have been displaced. In Humla, 602 houses have collapsed. Dozens of bridges, roads collapsed.Various roads were blocked and numerous animals are also dead.

Nine people were killed when a landslide buried their house at Kusma-2 Durlung on Jestha 31. One was injured. This was the first major event of the year.

The monsoon has been continuing since then. In Sindhupalchowk alone, 52 people have died and 29 are missing while 11 were injured. Deputy Secretary Awasthi said that the details of the damage other than humanitarian damage have not been revealed yet.

The indiscriminate use of dozers and excavators in the name of development infrastructure has caused huge damage. The landslide has been found to be large due to the loosening of the soil by the earthquake. Earthquakes have been the main cause of landslides in Sindhupalchowk, Parbat, Myadi, Tanahu and Kaski districts.

According to him, it has been raining continuously since Jestha, which weakened the soil structure. In the 30-year history, Sindhupalchowk and the mountains have received heavy rainfall this year.

This year's landslides have been blamed on more human than natural causes. There is no tradition of building a house safely. Building standards are not followed.

The use of dozers and excavators in development infrastructure has become widespread. According to him, environmental protection has not been followed. He said that the explosion at the hydropower project also caused landslides in some districts.

According to a geological study conducted by the National Reconstruction Authority in 2074 BS, more than 600 settlements in the quake-affected district alone are at risk of landslides.

NEA geologist Lekh Prasad Bhatta said that a geological study has been done in the quake-affected district. A team of 14 geologists, engineers and soil experts conducted a field study and conducted a geological study of the 14 most affected districts. A total of 1,103 locations were studied at different times. Of these, 486 places were found safe.

It has been found that 337 settlements like Jugal-2 Lidi of Sindhupalchowk need to be secured. There are 290 high-risk settlements that need to be relocated. Sindhupalchowk has also been most affected by the floods and landslides this year.

The study had pointed out that 96 places should be secured and 71 places should be relocated in Sindhupalchowk alone. Only 55 settlements have been relocated.

In the quake-hit district alone, 600 settlements like Lidi are still at risk. No geological study has been done across the country. No study has been done in Ramaroshan of Achham, Rupasa of Narharinath of Kalikot and Nakula of Mahabai.

He said that the recent landslides were not the only cause of the earthquake. He said that the use of dozers in development infrastructure has caused landslides due to natural disturbances and landslides.

‘Man-made problems have been added. The use of dozers and excavators in the development work caused a natural stir and caused this disaster. '

He said that there were signs of large landslides like Juraka in Sindhupalchowk and it was not possible to confirm the landslides during the rainy season. In many places, he said, cracks, fractures can be controlled by cutting wells and controlling cracks.
