Flood Victims in Kailali Staying Hungry along Postal Highway

People of Bhajani Municipality of Kailali, who were displaced after the floods in Kandra, Kanda and Patharaiya rivers entered the settlement areas are starving on the postal highway. They have complained that they have not received food for two days.

Sukai Dagaura of Bhajani-8, Sonaphanta, who was displaced along with his family after the floods hit his house, said that he has not been able to eat for two days.

He said that although he was not able to get even water to drink, he did not get help from the local level and other bodies.

"We cannot go to our houses. We are sitting on the highway. I haven't eaten anything since yesterday, 'he said.

Seven hundred families displaced by the floods are living in the highlands from Krishnanagar to Sonaphanta on the Postal Highway.

Asma Chaudhary, who was displaced by the floods, said that all the food was drowned when water flooded her house. She said she did not even have access to drinking water.

‘5-6 feet of water is inside  the house. All the food was destroyed, 'she said, who had been pitching a tent on the postal road for two days.' There is a problem of food and water here. '

She said that they had to fetch drinking water from a distance of about two kilometers as all the areas were inundated.

According to the District Administration Office, Kailali, 2,500 families have been displaced due to floods in the district on Wednesday and Thursday.

Ward Chairman Pankaj Chaudhary said that 1,150 families of Bhajan-8 have been displaced after the floods in Kandra, Kanda and Patharaiya rivers.

Most of the displaced are living in shelters on postal roads. Some locals are staying at Krishna Dhwaj Chand Secondary School.

About 700 of them are living on the highway, said Mayor Sher Bahadur Chaudhary. He said that noodles, biscuits, rice and other prepared food items were distributed to the displaced families on Thursday. He said that food could not be distributed to all as rescue work was underway.

Dozens of families have not been able to get relief in the flood-hit Joshipur village municipality. The displaced are living in different schools.

Shivraj Joshi, information officer at the administration office, said that more houses were inundated on Thursday as the rains did not stop.

Displaced families could not return home on Wednesday as continuous rains did not reduce the flood level. Joshi said that some families who returned home in the evening left their homes again on Thursday after the floods started to increase.

The villages of Bhajani, Tikapur, Joshipur and Janaki have been most affected by the floods and inundation.
