All Doors of Gandak Barrage Opened as Water Rises Above ‘Danger Level’

All the gates of the barrage on the Nepal-India border at Triveni in East Nawalparasi have been opened due to high water level in Narayani River. .

Tara Singh, land acquisition officer of Gandak Barrage, said that all the 36 gates of the barrage were opened after the river level rose above the danger level.

Three lakh 15 thousand cusecs of water was flowing in the barrage at 9pm on Monday night. He said that all the doors have been opened as the flow of 300,000 cusecs of water is considered as an indicator of danger.

Although the capacity of Gandak Barrage at the time of construction was 700,000 cusecs, it is now estimated to carry only 4 to 500,000 cusecs.

The District Administration Office, West Nawalparasi, has urged the locals of Gandak region to be vigilant after the rising water level in the river.

Chief District Officer Sagar Mani Pathak said that flood warnings had been issued in the coastal areas of Susta, Sarawal, Pratappur and Palhinandan villages of Gandak region. Security personnel have been alerted for possible disasters in the coastal area.
