Know about brain tumours:

World brain tumour day 2020 falls on June 8 every year. The day was initiated by the German Brain Tumour Association, called as Deutsche Hirntumorhilfe in German.

The association was established with an aim to provide support to the brain tumour patients and their family members besides providing facilities for scientists and health professionals for efficient treatment.

The day is also regarded as an International Day to spread awareness about the disorder and share information on it. As a large number of the people in the society do not have adequate knowledge about brain tumours there is a misconception that every tumour will either kill or result in coma with multiple problems.

However, a large majority of brain tumours can be treated successfully and most patients resume their normal life. Although a severe disease, with appropriate adequate knowledge and timely treatment can save many lives.

Knowing About Tumour:

A tumour is basically an abnormal growth of cells. Not all tumours are cancerous. Non-cancerous tumours are called benign while cancerous tumours are called malignant. When the tumour cells are normal, it is benign whereas if the cells are growing abnormally and uncontrollably then they are regarded as cancerous cells, and called malignant. 

Knowing about basic Symptoms and Diagnosis Of Brain Tumour:

The symptoms of a brain tumour mostly depends on the size of the tumour and the location of the tumour, but there are some basic symptoms that are associated with a brain tumour as each part of the brain controls specific functions in the body.

The symptoms also depend on the rate of growth and the rapidity with which the pressure rises inside the brain. Few of them are:

· Severe frequent headaches (not all headaches are due to tumours )

· Loss of consciousness

· Unexplained nausea or vomiting

· Loss of sensation or movement in limbs 

· Difficulty in balancing

· Drastic behavioral changes

· Blurred vision, double vision or loss of vision

· Hormonal imbalance.

· Sexual dysfunction

· Speech difficulties

· Seizures 

Diagnosis: The brain tumour is diagnosed by using methods like MRI and CT scan, Angiogram, Neurologic exam as well as by Spinal tap. 

Treatments for Brain Tumour: The treatment of every tumour is different per the location, size, stage, etc, of tumours. Some common treatment methods are;

· Microscopic or endoscopic surgery

· Radiotherapy

· Chemotherapy

· Steroids and

· Ventricular peritoneal shunt

Surgeries do come with the risk but in most cases after timely and proper treatment, patients can lead to healthy lives. Treatment of brain tumour requires a lot of patience and cooperation with the patient.

Strong emotional support from family members and friends can be added treatment as healing requires positive mental attitude.
